Well done to all our brothers and sisters who completed the FECycle Walthamstow to Cambridge ride yesterday!
The aim of the ride was: "To create a friendly, positive vibe, supporting each other and reaching the destination safely as one group, however long it takes".
Completing the 56 mile ride and the hills involved was an amazing achievement, especially in the 30 degree+ heat.
For many of us, this was the furthest we had ever cycled and the longest spent in the saddle. The majority of the group were trained Ride Leaders who have only taken up cycling in the past year or two.
The route was a beautiful one through scenic countryside and picturesque villages, with the first 20 miles being very smooth. However, the rest of the ride proved eventful, with a few 'mega blast' punctures including one complete tyre replacement, and Ustadh Hamid's derailleur falling off (obviously the bike protesting about being put through a lot of rides this summer including the London to Paris ride!)
We couldn't have done it without our amazing support driver 'Uncle' Arshad who followed us with refreshments, spares etc.
The spirit of camaraderie and mutual support was fantastic and epitomised what the FEC Community is all about.
Some comments from participants:
"This beautiful experience will stay with me for life mashaAllah and I hope to share it with my children and with theirs too, inshaAllah"
"The best ride for me so far ...jazakumullah to all those who put so much hard work into organising this. I pray this is the beginning of many more brilliant rides inshaAllah"
"The camaraderie, support and unity of the group was unprecedented... despite the wide range of abilities, types of bike and riding experience, everyone supported each other to get to our destination. This is what enabled us all to complete the ride in the extreme heat, al hamdulillah!"
Special thanks to brother Gary for all his hard work in planning, organising and leading this ride and the programme of preparatory training rides, and Ustadh Hamid for organising the support van and refreshments.
We hope this may become an annual event, and it would be fantastic to have more sisters joining the ride next year!
